Copyrights & Fair Use

This recording was made of the "Past President's Forum" during the Annual Meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (hfes.org) in October of 2009. The HFES mission is to "Promote the discovery and exchange of knowledge concerning the characteristics of human beings that are applicable to the design of systems and devices of all kinds."

One of my themes as 2007-2008 President of HFES was to encourage volunteerism, partly through endeavors to discuss what we do in a way that is engaging and, dare I say, entertaining. To this end, my 2008 Presidential Address (https://jfkprez.blogspot.com) was structured as a "Bob Newhart" style humorous-but-inspirational telephone conversation. How could I follow that up with my Past President's Forum the following year?

Traditionally, the Past President's Forum was a standard panel discussion, hosted by the immediate Past-President of the Society, highlighting topics of scientific interest to members. While the substance of these was never, in any way "dry" to fellow practitioners and scientists, I felt there was outreach potential in modeling my Forum after "Late Night" with David Letterman. I called it "The HF/E Show" (Human Factors & Ergonomics).

To that end, I framed panel discussions with luminaries in our field as "talk show" interviews. I also engaged an "HF/E Show Orchestra" and got a wonderful crew of Society volunteers to do camera, lighting, audio, cue cards, wrangling and other production duties. I did a monologue, a "Top 10" list, and we even had "commercial breaks", which were really just more fun content about Human Factors and Ergonomics.

There are many artifacts (photos and video clips) in this recording which likely fall under copyright laws. I believe that my use of these materials falls under the "comment, teaching, scholarship, and research" intentions in the Fair Use doctrine. Also, I will only allow the recording to be used only in non-profit, educational ways. (Incidentally, we did obtain releases from all the principal live participants.)

That being said, if you discover your content in this recording and have any objections to it being used in this way, please contact me and I will take down the recording forthwith and only post it again if I can manage to re-master it without your content.
